Genealogy Training Courses:
National Institute for Genealogical Studies

This Toronto-based institute offers Web-based courses in association with the Professional Learning Centre, Faculty of Information Studies, University of Toronto. Being Web-based you can get access to instruction in specialized topics. Courses may be taken either individually, or in a program toward a certificate in American Records, Canadian Records, English Records,General Methodology, German Records, Irish Records, Librarianship, or Scottish Records. Courses, usually last six weeks, and start every month.

Ottawa Public Library

As part of its program for adults, the Main Branch of the Ottawa Public Library offers a series of Free Public Internet Workshops, one of which is "Genealogy and the Internet". To find out when it is next being offered, and to access information on all adult education opportunities at OPL branches, check their Web site. Workshops fill up rapidly so register early.

The BIFHSGO Genealogy Links page contains a vast number of web-site links which are being constantly augmented and updated. The links are organized by type and area. The areas covered include Canada, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Most areas now have sections for each province / county.

The Genealogy Links pages also contain tips for the beginners; specifically UK & Ireland census records and UK & Ireland parish records including tips on using the IGI.

The following are sites that provide free genealogy services ...

Rootsweb - This is free collection of pages and services devoted to genealogy. There are pages devoted to individual provinces / states/ counties (known as the GenWeb). RootsWeb also hosts WorldConnect which is a database of user submitted trees (use information with caution) and a surname list. Rootsweb also supports a vast number of genalogy related mailing lists and Message Boards. In addition, RootsWeb also supports a number of large volunteer projects including FreeBMD and FreeReg amongst others. And, RootsWeb is also a provider of free space and utilities for people to create their own, genealogy related, web-sites known as Freepages.

Cyndi's List This is a large (250,000+) collection of genealogy links. It's well worth getting familiar with what this site offers.

GenUKI This is a large collection of genealogical information pages for England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. The county pages contain pertinent information for researching specific areas including archive addresses, parish record repositories etc etc.
