The Home Children Deaths database is intended to complement memorials, such as the Barnardo Girl’s Memorial in Peterborough, Ontario that lists approximately 8,000 names of children who passed through the Hazel Brae Home, and numerous other databases intended to aid in home child research. It also gives an indication of where these children lived and how they died.
The database was built using four primary sources: the RG76 General Correspondence files at Library and Archives Canada, newspaper obituaries and death notices, Barnardo’s Ups and Downs magazine, and information supplied by descendants of home children who gave the information knowing that a database was being developed. Information has been contributed, collected, collated and inputted by several individuals, including John Sayers, Lori Oschefski, Marjorie Kohli, Perry Snow, Jennifer Layne, Carol Black, and Dona Crawford.
The database has been expanded to include over 5,000 records. However, please note that this database represents the efforts of different individuals who wished to share what they have done, so there is duplication and inconsistent or incomplete referencing. The database is being modified and updated on an ongoing basis.
The format of the database has also changed—moving from a custom database to a spreadsheet. Follow the link at the bottom of the page to search the new database.
