Barnardo's Ups and Downs Magazine
The Ups and Downs magazine was published from August 1895 to December 1949 in Toronto by the Canadian Branch of Dr. Barnardo’s organization, which brought more British Home Children to Canada than any other group.

BIFHSGO’s database (below) contains almost 59,000 line items from the magazine, mostly names. There is, therefore, a reasonable chance a child who arrived in Canada through Dr. Barnardo’s organization or an affiliate is mentioned in the magazine.

If you find a name in the BIFHSGO database that interests you and the issue is not available online, you can obtain a scanned copy of the article from Library and Archives Canada. Details for accessing these articles are provided on the Library and Archives Canada website at Home Children Records. First, make sure to search the Library and Archives Canada database to find the page number, which is not always included in this BIFHSGO index.

If you have general questions about Home Children and their arrival in Canada, please email your request, with a clear subject in the subject line and as much detail as possible, to queries@bifhsgo.ca.

When Barnardo’s took over the Macpherson homes in 1924, there was a Marchmont Home section in the Ups and Downs magazine that catered to the children who came to Canada through Annie Macpherson’s Homes. During the period when this magazine was published, about 30,000 British children arrived in Canada through these organizations. Learn more about the magazine...

You can read a number of past issues of Ups and Downs online on the British Home Children in Canada website.
